(1) 1998 Providence Private Reserve 1500ml, Matakana

A perfect year. The 1998 vintage began with ideal spring weather. It was sunny, warm and very calm which translated into a perfect fruit set. Prior to and after fruit set, rain occurred in correct amounts at the correct time to develop the bunches. After Veraison, adequate rain ensured healthy berry size and condition prior to the dry ripening period. The ripening period was noted for hot days of 33°C and cool nights which developed flavour and concentration. Harvest occurred earlier than usual, commencing in early April. The weather during harvest was perfect.

Showing with a lighter ruby colour. The wine presents a fine scent of flowers and ripe berries. A slight sensation of tobacco, vanilla and tar on the palette. Followed by a long, firm finish of soft tannins and sweet fruit. An elegant and complex wine showing great finesse and weight as it ages. Will develop for the next 10+ years.

“ Jim Vuletic has been working in his wine shed for 25 years. He was one of the first wine makers on the hills of Matakana. Now there are also a number of flashy Boutique-style vineyards. But such outward appearances do not interest him. "I need no château and no catwalk, it's the wine that has to make the difference," he says.

But Jim Vuletic wants to make wine. "I just have to make wine," he emphasises. Not any wine; he aims for the ideal which for him is the Bordelais and, above all, the Château Cheval Blanc. For him "good wine is man's greatest cultural achievement" and Cheval Blanc remained unsurpassed: a "miracle of elegance and perfection". The 1947 vintage, which those in the know consider the best wine of the last century, he "has drunk already fourteen to fifteen times".

In his cellar Malbec and Merlot are fermenting in open wooden tubs, the Cabernet Franc has not been harvested yet. Jim Vuletic sleeps little because he wants to be close to his grapes and his musts. Again and again he cleans his wine press and his cellar, "I'm a bit of a clean freak," he says with a grin. He develops the wines for two years in new French Barriques of the Tonnellerie Aquitaine. Toward the Bordelais, which has been his inspiration for a long time, he has now developed an ambivalent attitude. It was the elegance of these wines which so beguiled him and which "I am now often missing. It's a shame that so many blockbusters are mixed together these days."

In many cellars wine makers 'manipulated' with reverse osmosis and micro oxydation, he says, while he did not even know yet how this was functioning. Anyway, one finds him most often in his little vineyard which, for him, is a 'magic place'. Jim Vuletic produces his wines with traditional craftsmanship, without much equipment but with a lot of intuition. "We oldies know that, once upon a time, the Bordelais was different and had a different taste," he says somewhat nostalgically.

It may sound strange when a New Zealander in Matakana claims: "I am still producing the traditional Saint-Emilion." But that best describes his work and his style of wine.”

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), AG (Vinous), JO (Jeremy Oliver), JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) D (Decanter) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and (RC) Raymond Chan are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder)          A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder)       Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder)        Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder)           indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
