The wood treatment is a bit more prominent though it remains reasonably subtle as it easily allows the cool, elegant and equally spicy aromas of various dark berries, plum and rose petal. There is terrific delineation to the chiseled and markedly stony flavors that also possess fine mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a sleek, focused and gorgeously persistent finish. This firmly structured effort is notably less youthfully austere than it usually is though don't mistake that for it necessarily being more accessible young. BH

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville’s Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru: 1920 - 2017

Jacques d’Angerville’s son Guillaume d’Angerville, who was working as an investment banker in Paris when his father died suddenly in July of 2003, returned to the family domaine barely six weeks before the harvest of ’03. While his father’s death was premature (Jacques contracted an infection while being treated for leukemia in a hospital in Dijon), Guillaume d’Angerville told me that it was always in the cards that he would eventually take over the family domaine. But he reached that station via a circuitous route. “During my teenage years, my father made it clear to me that he didn’t think it would be a good idea for us to work together right after I finished school,” he told me in a recent conversation. After all, these were not exactly boom times for Burgundy and a small estate would have trouble supporting two family members working full-time simultaneously. “And he also probably thought that working together was a recipe for a clash between father and son,” said d’Angerville.

So Guillaume d’Angerville went to business school and became an investment banker, spending the ‘80s, ‘90s and early ‘00s working in New York, London and Paris. But he always had it in his mind that he would return to the estate at some point. “And for sure I did not want it to be sold,” he told me, as it had been in his family for nearly 200 years.

Since taking over, Guillaume d’Angerville has modernized the estate while retaining his father’s non-interventionist approach to winemaking and passion for preserving terroir character. Perhaps the most significant change Guillaume d’Angerville has made since taking over has been his adoption of biodynamic principles. “Anne-Claude Leflaive convinced me to do it,” he told me. In 2005 he hired François Duvivier, who had degrees in science and enology from the University of Dijon, as chef de culture, and Duvivier oversaw the conversion to biodynamie between 2006 and 2009. Duvivier was later promoted to régisseur. D’Angerville and Duvivier make all key decisions together. Duvivier also supervises Domaine du Pélican, the estate in the Jura where he has been d’Angerville’s partner since the latter first started buying vineyards in 2008. Meanwhile, Renaud de Villette retired a few years ago but still returns for the harvest—and to walk the vineyards during the growing season, where his input as an agriculture engineer continues to be valuable.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card, or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), AG (Vinous), JO (Jeremy Oliver), JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) D (Decanter) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and (RC) Raymond Chan are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder)          A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder)       Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder)        Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder)           indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
