As we start to wind our way towards Christmas the auctions are coming thick and fast. The October auction is, again, something we are very proud of. We continue to lead the secondary market with incredibly well-cellared and well-sourced wines. This month we have another superbly built and curated temperature cellar to add to our offerings. We always try and provide scores on the wines we offer, and this month sees a number of 100 point and 20 point wines. The perfect wine? Beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder but when both Jancis Robinson MW and Robert Parker.com agree on a wine by giving it their top score respectively there must be something in that.
As always, we start with New Zealand with a few magnums as well as the usual suspects. Several vintages of Stonyridge Larose that always offers great value in comparison to current the release and will enhance any cellar. The same can be said of Te Mata Coleraine and surely these two wines are consistently at the top of their game. Coleraine is also joined with Lots of Awatea and Bullnose. Syrah is something that NZ is making great waves with and we have wines from the great 2013 vintage on offer. If you are looking for large format we have The Antipodean from Matakana in 5 litre, magnums and 750ml bottlings. If you are a Riesling fan check out the Prophet’s Rock Dry Riesling that, in my opinion, is one of the best NZ has to offer.
Australia features the very rare Penfolds Bin 60A as well as the Penfold’s flagship – Grange. Henschke Hill of Grace with its incredibly old vines covering three vintages. There is also a signed magnum from the Barossa legend the late Peter Lehmann.
From the Napa we have the very highly regarded Paul Hobbs and for the very thirsty there is the Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 5 litre bottle.
Gaja features strongly in the Italian section with Barolo, Barbaresco and a 1985 Darmagi Cabernet Sauvignon (this wine possibly has the longest cork I’ve ever seen!). If it is Barolo that you are looking for there is also the 1978 Giacomo Borgogno that has spent its life in a temperature-controlled cellar and has very little ullage.
Chave, Clos des Papes, Beaucastel and Chateau Rayas all play a prominent part in the Rhone section and we still have some great Burgundies with a bit of age on them for those looking for something that ready for drinking.
However, again, it is Bordeaux that is the real highlight in this auction. We have wines going back to the celebrated vintage of 1945. And if that rocks your boat also look out for the 1961 Chateaux Latour and Mouton Rothschild. There is the very rare Le Pin and not quite so rare, but still difficult to find, Petrus. We have four vintages of Lafite Rothschild including 1959. From the 90’s with have an incredible amount of excellently cellared wines in a number of different formats from 750ml through to 6 litre bottlings. These wines should just be starting to hit their straps and offer great value.
As always please call if you have any questions about any of the wines in this auction – we are here to help and will give our honest opinion on any of the wines we are presenting.
Please note that due to Labour Weekend this auction will finish at 7pm on Monday 22nd October and not the normal Sunday evening.
Happy bidding!
