Hot on the heels of our very successful Late Winter and Single Vendor auctions it is time to leap into our Late Winter Rare and Fine Wine Online Auction. Here you will find a diverse assortment and some of the finest wines produced in the world, as well some fantastically valued, properly aged, ready-to-drink wines. Remember, we don’t want to waste your time with Start Prices that aren’t anywhere near the Reserve. When you bid with us be rest assured that if you are the top bidder with any Lot it will be yours.
As always, this auction is filled with stellar wines from all over the wine producing globe. The New Zealand section sets the tone with some great examples of our interpretation of Bordeaux blends. Auckland puffs out its chest with perennial favourites Te Motu, Stonyridge Larose, Te Whau, Goldwater, The Antipodean, Destiny Bay, and Puriri Hills, The now non-producing (but very highly regarding back in their day) St Jerome. Hawkes Bay is coming hard on the heels with Te Mata Coleraine and Awatea, Sacred Hill Helmsman, Paritua, Newton Forrest, Stonecroft and LVCA.
Central Otago headlines the Pinots with Felton Road Blocks 3 and 5, Valli, Chard Farm and Two Paddocks. Marlborough also deserves an honourable mention with Giesen, Huia, Seresin, Pyramid Valley and Clos Henri showing their wares admirably in a strong South Island contingent. Martinborough with some heavyweights of their own; Te Kairanga, Martinborough Vineyards and Dry River.
Our Syrah’s are world class and what’s not to like about 19.5/20 wines from Craggy Range Le Sol reinforced with Mills Reef Elspeth, Dry River, Frenchman’s Hill and a Central Otago offering from Nanny Goat.
A classy Chardonnay section is on offer with Kumeu River and Neudorf headlining. Aromatics are also spicing up this section with Dry River, Vinoptima, Chard Farm and Pegasus Bay.
Australia, as always, comes out swinging with three wines scoring 99/100 or more from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – Penfolds Bin 60A, and two vintages of Clarendon Hills Astralis. These are backed up by more Bin wines from Penfolds, Langmeil, and Cullen. South Australia’s finest is hard to pass up including Rockford, Penfolds Grange, Jim Barry Armagh and Henschke Hill of Grace.
Again, this sale offers an outstanding selection of aromatics including lovely, aged Rieslings. You’ll recognise many famous names such as Willi Schaefer, Muller Catoir, and Kerpen from Germany and over the border to Alsace with Marcel Deiss and Trimbach.
Italy is always strong, and we have some beauties with Masseto, Ornellaia and Gaja.
Champagne continues to tell this great story. The selection on offer has made Mrs Wine Auction Room a little bit giddy when she saw contributions to this highly desirable selection including Dom Perignon, Louis Roederer Cristal and Krug.
The warmth of the wines from the Rhone can be very pleasing at this time of year and we have plenty on offer including 100-point wines from Pegau, M. Chapoutier, Mordoree, Beaucastel and Guigal.
We are constantly asked what wines are worthy of investment which is never an easy question to answer but we strongly recommend the new wines from Francois Millet formally of de Vogue. Our Burgundy selection also showcases Armand Rousseau, Goerges Roumier, Liger Belair, Rene Engel, Leroy, Dauvissat and de Vogue all putting their best foot forward.
The Right Bank takes top billing for the Bordeaux section, and it is easy to see why with the likes of Chateaux Angelus and Monbousquet from St Emilion and Lafleur and Le Pin from Pomerol. Don’t worry as the Left Bank fans have plenty on offer as well with Chateaux Montrose and Latour in large format.
Post dinner treats include vintage ports from Warre’s and Taylors in Oporto with tawnies from Grant Burge and Tyrrells from South Australia. New Zealand’s very highly regarded Mazuran’s from West Auckland along with an older Kumeu River and a very old bottling of Corbans representing these fine shores.
But wait…that’s not all. No, no, no, we have some fabulous spirits in this auction with a great deal of time on their side. Many gins, vodkas and whiskies from far flung countries round out this auction with alcohol strengths that our parents were more used to! Enough to makes one’s eyes water.
Finally, as with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports, critic reviews, inspecting the detailed photographs for each lot, and setting realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary, and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.
Best of luck with your bids and don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to know about any of the wines. Please bid responsibly.
All bids are bidding.
