Hot on the heels of our Mid-Year Festive Auction it is time to leap into our Winter Rare and Fine Wine Online Auction. Here you will find a diverse assortment and some of the finest wines produced in the world. Coupled with some fantastically valued, properly aged, ready-to-drink wines we’re confident you’ll find something of interest. Our selection from across the globe includes many 100 point wines proving this to be an opportune time to invest in your cellar.
Remember, we don’t want to waste your time with Start Prices that aren’t anywhere near the Reserve. When you bid with us be rest assured that if you are the top bidder with any Lot it will be yours.
We start, as always, with the New Zealand Cabernet and Merlot dominant selection, where you will come across our first wine with a perfect score, 2013 Villa Maria Ngkirikiri. This wine is in fine company with some of New Zealand’s most celebrated producers such as Te Motu, Te Whau and Destiny Bay from Waiheke rubbing shoulders with some of the best from Hawkes Bay with Craggy Range The Quarry and Sophia, Te Mata Coleraine and Awatea. Keep an eye out for South Auckland’s finest Puriri Hills and The Antipodean and Providence from Matakana.
World class New Zealand Pinot Noirs are well represented with several producers leading the charge; Gibbston Valley, Peregrine The Pinnacle and many offers from Two Paddocks from Central Otago. Heading north we come across the wines of Pyramid Valley from North Canterbury. Jumping the Strait and over the Rimutaka’s we come to the picturesque township of Martinborough with a limited bottling from Palliser Estate. Plenty of delicious offers here
Syrah’s are wonderful to drink at this time of year with their ‘big, soft and warm’ characters; perfect for sitting in front of the fireplace. We have some beauties with the Te Mata Bullnose, Craggy Range Le Sol and Trinity Hill – being some of the best.
Our world class wines are not limited to reds in New Zealand. When it comes to Chardonnay, we have some pretty good ones here on the shaky isles and some of the best in this sale with the highly rated Vidals and many examples from Pyramid Valley. As Jancis Robinson MW said in one of her columns from October 2018 ‘White burgundy apart, it's amazing how many of the greatest Chardonnays today are grown in the southern hemisphere.’
We keep the accolade rolling with 99 points or above wines including the second only release of Penfolds Bin 60A from the 2004 vintage in both bottle and magnum. Clarendon Hills Australis features with a 99-point 2002 and the 100 point 2010. Don’t gloss over the selections from Petaluma, Rosemount Estate, Jim Barry Armagh and Henschke Hill of Grace. If your cellar doesn’t need filling then consider some of the outstanding value on offer from the likes of Dolan Family Wines Shiraz or Grant Burge GB56 Shiraz all with Reserves of $2.
Heading into the Old World, we come across the gorgeous and delicate Rieslings from Germany with Dr Loosen and Egon Muller leading the charge.
Italy too is filled with jaw-droppers with Ornellaia, Sassicaia, Masetto and Argiano (with their Wine Spectator Wine of the Year for 2023) from Tuscany.
Moving into France and the beautifully aromatic wines of Alsace we are blessed with Domaines Weinbach, Rolly Gassmann and Schlumberger.
The sparks really start flying with the 100 point wines when we get to the Rhone section. The Rhone probably comes out on top with 4 wines with perfect scores – from Chateauneuf du Pape with the 2007 Pegau Cuvee da Capo and then from the Northern Rhone, the 2003 Guigal Ex Voto Ermitage and 2012 La Landonne Cote Rotie then from Chapoutier the La Pavillon Ermitage 1995. That’s not all from the fabulous Rhone with Beaucastel, Clos des Papes, Ferraton and Yves Cuilleron showcasing their wares.
Burgundy is often referred as “the wine of kings, the king of wines” and we certainly have some Burgundian royalty with Leroy, DRC, Rene Engle, Armand Rousseau, Dujac, Roumier, Meo Camuzet and de Vogue all on offer along with some great value wines from Albert Bichot and Faiveley.
Bordeaux is equally rich with high scoring wines, including the 2010 Chateaux Pontet Canet and 2005 La Mission Haut Brion receiving a perfect score, and Chateaux Lafleur 2009 and 2010 and Pavie 2003 all achieving a very creditable 99/100 scores. Top this off with 4 of the 5 First Growths and some great value, everyday drinkers and one is spoilt for choice.
Vintage Port is always popular at this time of year and we have a range of vintages from 1960 through to 2015.
As with all Wine Auction Room sales, you’ll find wines from all corners of the world – too numerous to mention here. Take your time to browse our catalogue and use the advanced filter to dive deep into the categories most interesting to you.
When buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports and critic reviews and imposing realistic expectations. You will also notice that our photographs of each new lot are very detailed, helping you to inspect the wine from the comfort of your seat. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.
Happy browsing and please bid responsibly. All bids are binding.
