As we slide towards the end of the year, our auctions continue to showcase an array of wine providing everyone plenty of opportunity to stock up the cellar or grab that trophy bottle for a special occasion. Our selection in this auction is vast, suiting many tastes and purses; perfectly fitting as our last online auction for 2024, with a fire-cracking live streamed auction scheduled to close out the year in December. This auction truly has something for everybody with many wines starting at $2 and Champagne starting at $20.
We start with the ever-popular New Zealand Bordeaux blends showcasing examples from the old favourites including Trinity Hill, Craggy Range, Vidals, Villa Maria, Te Mata’s Awatea and Coleraine, and for the really thirsty a 6 litre Coopers Creek which should go well at any BBQ. These vinous delights are ably supported by Waiheke’s Destiny Bay, Te Motu, Te Whau, Passage Rock, Fenton and Stonyridge. The greater Auckland region provides Providence, The Antipodean and Gillman from Matakana as well as Clevedon’s finest – Puriri Hills.
If Pinot Noir is more to your taste, loiter amongst these silky and sensuous wines from Dry River in Martinborough, or from the South Island we have Fromm, Cloudy Bay and Settlement from Marlborough, Terra Sancta, Akarua, Gibbston Valley, Mount Edward and Quartz Reef all from Central Otago. Now that’s making a statement!
New Zealand Syrah is making waves internationally and what could be better than Te Mata Bullnose, Craggy Range Le Sol, Trinity Hill Homage and Sacred Hill from Hawkes Bay. Check out the wonderful value in the older bottlings of Babich Mara starting at $2.
Lovely, aged chardonnays and aromatics round out our New Zealand section jostling for a seat at your dinner table in the festive season. For me and Mrs Wine Auction Room the chardonnays from Pyramid Valley and Kumeu River are always welcome at our table. The aromatics are equally impressive with Chard Farm, Felton Road, and the delicious Hans Herzog Gewurztraminer.
If the wonderful wines from the “west island” are more to your liking there is an abundance of great value wines, many with a few years under their belt. Older vintages of Petaluma, Jim Barry Armagh, Henschke and Penfolds from South Australia. Yarra Yering from Victoria has long been a favourite of ours and we’re very excited by their offerings in this auction.
There is some wonderful value in the Other New World countries and in this auction especially Argentina and Chile. Check them out for that perfect Malbec or Syrah to wash down the BBQ.
Germany is incredibly strong with world-class examples of Riesling covering many must weights from producers such as Fritz Haag, Dr Loosen and the fantastic Egon Muller.
Italy not only has the worshipped wines of Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Masseto from Tuscany but also many producers from Montalcino with their delicious and rich Brunello’s and a special mention to Piedmont with some fantastic Barolo’s and Barbaresco’s.
Champagne starting at $20 is well worth a look with many well-known brands including Perrier Jouet, Bollinger, Moet, Mumm and Louis Roederer.
Alsace really steps up with Domaine Weinbach, Rolly Gassmann, Hugel and Lucien Albrecht.
The Rhone continues in its rich vein of form with Guigal including Lalas, Chapoutier, Yves Cuilleron, Ferraton, Rene Rostaign and Chave in the north up against Beaucastel, Pierre Usseglio, Clos des Papes and Pegau from Chateauneuf du Pape in the south.
Burgundy – the wine of kings and the king of wine! This sale offers some of the great names with Meo-Camuzet, Faiveley, Bouchard, Mongeard-Mugneret, Lamarche and de Vogue in the reds and Chablis superstar Dauvissat out front in the whites.
If aged Bordeaux is more your style, we have Classed Growths as well as many Bordeaux Superior and Cru Bourgeois covering six decades. Realistic pricing on these aged wines gives everyone the opportunity to imbibe.
If vintage port is your thing, we can certainly help with that. Prices starting at $20 for vintage port is rarely seen so don’t miss out.
Finally, as with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports, critic reviews, inspecting the detailed photographs for each lot, and setting realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary, and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.
Best of luck with your bids and don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to know about any of the wines.
Please bid responsibly. All bids are binding.
