We are thrilled to offer you our final live auction for 2024. And what a year it has been!
We wish to thank all our vendors and buyers whose charm, discernment and loyalty continues to shape our business, and we hope to share a glass or two with you over the festive season.
This sale starts with a selection of well represented New Zealand Bordeaux blends. There are the usual suspects with wines from Stonyridge, Destiny Bay, Te Whau and Goldwater from Waiheke along with the wonderful Puriri Hills from Clevedon and Providence and The Antipodean from Matakana. Not to be forgotten Hawkes Bay has some wonderful wines of its own with Craggy Range, Brookfields, Sacred Hill and Te Mata all featuring.
Sub-regions for Pinot Noir are really coming to the fore and Bannockburn is well represented from Central Otago with Akarua and Felton Road. But it’s not all about Bannockburn in Central Otago. Check out Valli with their wines from all the sub-regions with a Waitaki example (a region close to my heart) scoring high with 20/20. Bendigo puts its best foot forward with the Prophets Rock Retrospect. Not to be left out Gibbston Valley has wines from The Wild Irishman, Peregrine and Chard Farm. Further north we come across Pegasus Bay from North Canterbury and Fromm from Marlborough. Martinborough leads the North Island with Ata Rangi and Dry River.
New Zealand’s Syrah get a great deal of praise and rightly so. This auction presents a great selection including Trinity Hill Homage, Stonecroft, Elephant Hill and Te Mata Bullnose from Hawkes Bay. There is also Northland’s finest with the Trophy winning 1996 Okahu Estate Kaz Shiraz from 1996 – a wine that really made the wine public of New Zealand sit up and take notice.
Our New Zealand selection of whites offers fantastic drinking over the summer months including crowd pleasers such as Felton Road, Cloudy Bay and Kumeu River Chardonnays. There’s also some aged Sauvignon Blancs that have had some time in oak from Cloudy Bay with their Te Koko and the Te Mata Cape Crest.
Not to be outdone, Australia puts its best foot forward with an amazing selection of Penfolds with Bins 707, 407 and 389 along with many vintages of Grange and St Henri. But that is far from all with Taltarni and Dalwinnie from Victoria, Barossa Valley Estates and Wynns from South Australia as well as absolutely gorgeous Tolpuddle Pinot Noir from Tasmania.
Other New World countries have some interesting wines with Dominus and clos de Val from USA with Cheval des Andes and Catena Zapata from Argentina, with Sena and Almaviva from Chile rounding out this section.
Italy is all about the “B”s with Barolos, Barbarescos and Brunellos from well-known and well-worthy producers. Super Tuscans Bibi Graetz and Masseto also feature strongly.
Mrs Wine Auction Room is adamant that Champagne should be consumed at any time and especially during the Festive season. We have some beauties on offer with vintages of Dom Perignon and the fabulous 2007 Bollinger RD.
Things really start fizzing once we get to the Rhone with multiple vintages of Guigal LaLas.from Cote Rotie. The Southern Rhone, dominated by Chateauneufs and Gigdondas, also gets the taste buds flying with Clos des Papes, Marcoux Vieilles Vignes, Grand Veneur, and Bousquets and from Rasteu the lovely wines of Soumade.
Burgundy has been getting a lot of attention lately and we have some excellent examples with wines from Meo-Camuzet and Hudelot-Noellat as well as Francois Raveneau from Chablis..
Sauternes is always a Christmas favourite and whether it is a 100 point 2001 Chateau d’Yquem or a 2016 Climens or one of the numerous vintages of Coutet there is something here for you.
Bordeaux is traditionally strong, and it is no different in this auction with great examples from both the Left and Right Banks from Cru Bourgeois through to Classed Growths. There are great wines from the revered 1982 vintage from Cheval Blanc, Gruaud Larose and Mouton Rothschild along with Pomerols, Pauillacs and Pontet Canet. Whether it be a First Growth, a Super Second or a second wine there is something to whet your whistle.
The fortified selection features 1977s from Fonseca, Gould Campbell and Warres.
Please take your time to scroll through our final catalogue for 2024. We know that each lot offers great value and may even be that perfect gift for the holiday season. Buying wines from auction presents a great opportunity to attain mature wines or wines on their way to maturity and those rarely, if ever, found in retail. However, it is worth remembering that wine continues to age in the bottle and will eventually fade - for some wines this could be short term, for others long term.
As with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing our provenance notes, widely available vintage reports and critic reviews and imposing realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment.
So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction. Happy browsing and please bid responsibly.
All bids are binding.
