Our first auction of 2019 is the February Rare and Fine Wine Online auction. As always, we are proud as punch to bring to you a wonderful array of aged and interesting wines.

There are many highlights - especially from New Zealand with a number of fortified wines from a bygone era. These include offerings from Mazurans, Cedar Vineyards, San Marino (Kumeu River), Matua Valley and Coopers Creek. Due to the higher level of alcohol, these wines keep very well and there are a number of them that have spent their life resting in a purpose-built passive cellar. These wines are an example of how the industry in New Zealand began and what a huge part they played in the metamorphous that lead us to the path we are on today.

Also, from New Zealand we have many aged Syrah and Bordeaux blend wines from Hawkes Bay that have been carefully cellared and come to us in fantastic condition. Highlights here include Te Mata Coleraine and Bullnose, Stonecroft and Red Metal. Included in this line-up are numerous wines from the highly sort after 1998 vintage.

Australia is always strong, and we have great value wines with age some with Reserves under $20.

Masseto and Gaja lead the charge from Italy, that also has some great value wines including the lovely fresh and crisp Cantina Mesa Giunco Vermentino from Sardinia - perfect for that summer BBQ.

The French section covers all the major producing areas with some well-priced aged wines as well as some absolute superstars. Sauternes always offers great value and this auction is no different. Sauternes is coming back into fashion (in our mind it should never have become unfashionable) and prices worldwide are starting to increase.

Bordeaux has many wines; the First Growths are well covered with vintages spanning over 60 years as well as a 100-point wine from Pavie,1982 Chateau Lascombes and 1971 Mouton Cadet.

With many high scoring wines and wines that have come with great provenance it is hard to pick the absolute highlight, so we might just leave that to you.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

ONLINE BIDDING

You can also bid online during the auction if you have registered with us.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card, EFTPOS or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.
