As the sun rises on 2020 we are delighted to bring to you our first online auction of the year. And a beauty it is too with everything you need for the summer season and beyond. We have great value New Zealand Chardonnays and Pinots for the BBQ as well as some iconic Bordeaux blends from The Antipodean, Destiny Bay, Stonyridge, the now no longer produced Benfield and Delamare. Not to be overshadowed, we also have the Bob Campbell MW 98 point 2013 Te Mata Coleraine. Loads of NZ Chardonnays with Te Mata Elston, Kupe, Kumeu River and Villa Maria Reserves; a little something for everyone.

Australia is strong with typically bold wines to stand up to any BBQ you want to throw at them and some wonderfully aged Margaret River Rieslings from Howard Park.

Many wines from NZ and Australia that have been through before are now at No Reserve so a good chance to stock up on some everyday drinkers with a bit of age on their side.

Germany also has some aged Rieslings from the Mosel with Fritz Haag Auslese.

We continue to have some lovely white wines from the Loire and Alsace and some hearty reds from the Rhone.

We love serving and drinking aged Rieslings as a light, summer alternative to the ever-popular Rose; and our bold choice is always met with surprise and delight.

Burgundy has some superstars from the likes of Ramonet, Dujac, Georges Lignier and Lignier Belair and some great value whites from the Maconnaise.

Not to be denied Bordeaux has aged Cru Bourgeois and classed Growths from both the Left and Right Banks either for the cellar or the table.

Once you have digested all this you can take advantage of the undervalued Vintage Ports and Sauternes that are available. These styled wines are a little unfashionable at the moment, but we love them. Because of this these stunning wines offer some real value and are a great way to finish any dinner party.

As with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports and critic reviews and imposing realistic expectations. You will also notice that our photographs of each new lot are more detailed, helping you to inspect the wine from the comfort of your seat. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

You can also bid online during the auction if you have registered with us.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), ST (Stephen Tanzer), JS (James Suckling), AG (Antonio Galloni), TA (Tim Atkin MW), JH (James Halliday), JO (Jeremy Oliver), HH (Huon Hooke) , JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and D (Decanter) are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder) A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder) Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder) Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder) indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
