We feel proud and privileged to bring to you our March Rare and Fine Wines online auction.

There are some wonderful wines available with a huge amount of great value wines especially from Australia.

New Zealand has the usual suspects with the standouts being Bell Hill Pinot Noir 2006, the 2103 Te Mata Coleraine (we believe this vintage will be attracting the same kind of prices the 1998 is currently getting in years to come), 2008 Felton Road Block 3 as well as Stonyridge Larose, Craggy Range, Antipodean and Valli to name but a few. Chardonnays get more than a smattering of wonderful and ready to drink wines from some great producers and vintages.

As mentioned, Australia is very strong with some great value and super exciting wines with a favourite of ours the Cullen Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2005, Penfolds Grange, Cape Mentelle, a number of wines from Wynns but the amount of wines from Brokenwood including their wines from the Hunter Valley and beyond are rare to see in the New Zealand secondary market. Check out the de Bortoli Rare Dry Botrytis Semillon if you are looking for a bottle that will bring a lot of discussion around the dinner table.

France is well represented with some great Burgundies (both Pinots and Chardonnays) as well as some really good value wines from Southern Burgundy. We are coming to the end of the fabulous Alsatian wines from a wonderful purpose-built underground cellar. Also, from that cellar are some really great value Sauternes that would continue to cellar well for some years but are also drinking well now. Bordeaux has some smashing wines with 1982 Chateau Gloria, along with a few First Growths, Petrus and many Cru Bourgeois that have spent a few years in the cellar and are very much in their best drinking window now.

Fortified wines are also strong the wines from Portugal, Australia and New Zealand – there’s even a few sherries for those who, like me, enjoy these styled wines.

Spirits are in more quantities than usual so get on board with those as there are some great prices.

As with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports and critic reviews and imposing realistic expectations. You will also notice that our photographs of each new lot are more detailed, helping you to inspect the wine from the comfort of your seat. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

You can also bid online during the auction if you have registered with us.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

RATINGS

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), ST (Stephen Tanzer), JS (James Suckling), AG (Antonio Galloni), TA (Tim Atkin MW), JH (James Halliday), JO (Jeremy Oliver), HH (Huon Hooke) , JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and D (Decanter) are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder) A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder) Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder) Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder) indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
