Well that was fun wasn't it! We wish to thank everyone who was involved in our April Live streamed auction. We are not planning to stream any more live sales from our kitchen, but you never do know these days.

We are now back to our normal schedule and are very proud to present our May Online auction. This auction not only features some great wines but also many everyday wines that represent fabulous value, especially if you’re looking for wines that have been cellared well and are now ready to drink. We also have a few non-wine products like the ready mixed Campari minis or the wooden wine racks or a great wine cabinet. Not to mention the Elderflower liqueur and other liqueurs and spirits.

The New Zealand section is packed with wines that are well sought after and ready to drink. Highlights include the very highly regarded 1998 Te Mata Coleraine and some wonderfully aged Pinot Noirs. We are enjoying drinking these wines. They repeatedly show that our Pinots age fantastically well. There are also many Chardonnays and more Rieslings that did so well in the previous auction; and the Vinoptima Gewurztraminer - surely one of the best examples of this variety produced in New Zealand.

Australia is always hard to beat for value and this auction is no different. There are many aged Cabernets and Shiraz’s – look out for some of the Wynn’s of Coonawarra reds from their Black Label through to the fabulous John Riddoch and Michael.

France has some great examples with wines from Alsace and Loire but also white Burgundies from Ramonet that have come from the cellar of a well-known local winemaker who has revised the Reserves for these wines. Burgundy also has some great Pinots from the very illustrious through to the great value Premier Cru 2009 Nicolas Potel Maison Roche de Bellene Aux Echanges from Chambolle-Musigny.

Our selection of Champagne, Sauternes and Red Bordeaux always have great wines and offer terrific value. If First Growths don’t suit your budget check out some of the non-cru classe wines that have a bit of age on their side.

If you are looking for wines to restock the cellar after the lockdown we are here to help. Don’t hesitate to give us a call if you would like more in-depth knowledge of how any of these wines have been stored or other questions you may have. As with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports and critic reviews and imposing realistic expectations. You will also notice that our photographs of each new lot are more detailed, helping you to inspect the wine from the comfort of your seat. The reward of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

You can also bid online during the auction if you have registered with us.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), ST (Stephen Tanzer), JS (James Suckling), AG (Antonio Galloni), TA (Tim Atkin MW), JH (James Halliday), JO (Jeremy Oliver), HH (Huon Hooke) , JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and D (Decanter) are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder) A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder) Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder) Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder) indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
