The second quarter of 2020 has taken us all into unchartered territory, yet at The Wine Auction Room we are extremely grateful to have navigated these waters rather smoothly with your tremendous support. I think it is safe to say we all need a few more glasses of fine wine every week these days, and we’re happy to oblige with another catalogue stuffed with goodies. Winter may be a bit different for all this year, but we hope you are still socialising and pulling the best corks to celebrate our collective health.

We start off strongly with the balance of wines from a “Gentleman from Taranaki” which proved a hit in the June Live auction. Accompanying these are some wonderful Bordeaux blends from the likes of Te Mata, Brookfields, Clearview, Unison, Craggy Range from Hawkes Bay and Obsidian and Destiny Bay from Waiheke.

The Pinots are an absolute delight with superstars Ata Rangi, Bell Hill, Dry River and Felton Road but if aged Syrah’s are your thing check out the Mudbrick, Esk Valley and Vidals for some benchmark wines.

Australian Shiraz puts it best foot forward with Penfolds Grange and Jim Barry Armagh but also some brands that are not only not seen often or are the new wave of South Australian producers with Noon, Molly Dooker and Amen Ra. The absolute standout for us is the very rare Wendouree from the Clare Valley. If you are looking for something really out of the ordinary the 2010 Sirromet Saint Judes Road Shiraz Grand Reserve - a high altitude wine from the Granite Belt in Queensland has been making waves with many critics and is well worth a look.

Europe showcases wines from Germany, Spain and Italy that show some great value as everyday drinkers while France expresses herself with aged wines from Alsace with the reputable Rolly Gassmann, Loire with Marc Bredif and Baumard. We also have more of the 1983 Taittinger that proved very popular last year, as well as aged red Burgundies and a wonderful array of Bordeaux from Cru Bourgeois through to Classed Growths including Chateaux Latour and Palmer.

For me, some of the real highlights are in the digestive or post main meal wines/liqueurs/ports. We have vintage port from a number of vintages including 1977, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1997 and the more recent 2007. Cognacs in Baccarat Crystal, older liqueurs as well as a few spirits round out the auction.

Finally, as with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports, critic reviews, inspecting the detailed photographs for each lot, and setting realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary, and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

You can also bid online during the auction if you have registered with us.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), ST (Stephen Tanzer), JS (James Suckling), AG (Antonio Galloni), TA (Tim Atkin MW), JH (James Halliday), JO (Jeremy Oliver), HH (Huon Hooke) , JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and D (Decanter) are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder) A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder) Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder) Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder) indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
