A new month, a new season and yes, a new auction. Hot on the heels of our very successful “Collection of a Liquor Industry Giant” it is time to spring into our September Rare and Fine Wine Online Auction. It has been a joy presenting a string of great auctions from our informed vendors; they know where to get the best advice and service.

As always, this auction is filled with stellar wines from all over the wine producing globe. We start with New Zealand and some very sort after brands with perennial favourites Te Mata, Stonyridge, The Antipodean, Ata Rangi and Dry River. These long-established fine wine brands are backed up admirably with some newer (and equally desirable wines) in Bell Hill, Rockburn, Unison, Mt Difficulty, Valli and TWAR favourite Prophet’s Rock.

The ‘West Island’ (aka Australia) is well represented with an array of Penfolds which is keeping good company with the likes of Wynns, Amon Ra, d’Arenberg, Noon, Mollydooker from South Australia. Cast an eye over the aged examples from Orlando and Yalumba to taste a bit of history.

The rest of the new world also has a couple of stars with the very highly regarded Cask 23 from Stag’s Leap and some beautifully crafted Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir.

If the old world is more your gig, there is plenty to whet the appetite with Joh Jos Prum, Fritz Haag and Dr Loosen from the Mosel. Bondi Santi, Gaja, Masi, Masseto, Ornellaia and Poderi Aldo Conterno put their best foot forward for Italy, and Spain shows its value with some well-priced cellar stockers.

And then there is France with its beautiful Champagnes, lovely aromatics from Alsace and fresh and fruity wines from the Loire to bring your spring fling into full flight. This gently nudges us towards the fine wines from Burgundy with some fantastic wines, both reds and whites, at Village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru level. DRC, Ramonet, Clos de Tart, Leroy, Domaine Leflaive, Jadot and Liger Belair to name but a few.

Rhone has some lovely wines from Beaucastel, Clos des Papes, Pegau and Charvin in the south and Alain Voge, Chave, Rene Rostaing, Yves Cuilleron and Paul Jaboulet in the north.

Bordeaux positively sparkles with some voluptuous Sauternes from Chateaux d’Yquem, de Fargues, Coutet and the Wine Spectator Wine of the Year the 2001 Rieussec. I had the privilege of drinking one of these recently and it is just wow!

Red Bordeaux always excites and with Petrus, Lafite, Latour and Pontet Canet from the 70s, 80s and 90s; wines that are ready for your table.

The rest of the old world is covered off with wines from Croatia and Santorini to remind us all of that European holiday that we wistfully long for.

We’ve had an excellent run of vintage ports lately and September is no different with examples from 83, 85, 97, 03 and 07 to sit and mull over in front of the fireplace or your old two bar heater.

If port is not your go-to, then perhaps a cognac from Hennessy, Otard, Martell or even a Remy Martin Louis XIII will warm the cockles.

Finally, as with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports, critic reviews, inspecting the detailed photographs for each lot, and setting realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary, and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.

Collection Information

To collect your purchases from The Wine Auction Room, please contact the team at least 24 hours prior to your preferred collection time. Collection is from 16-22 Virginia Avenue East, Eden Terrace. If you have supplied us with an out of Auckland address we will automatically assume you will want your wine couried to you. The cost of the courier is passed on at our cost and will automatically be added to your invoice. All wine must be collected within 10 days of invoice.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

You can also bid online during the auction if you have registered with us.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), AG (Vinous), JO (Jeremy Oliver), JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) D (Decanter) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and (RC) Raymond Chan are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder) A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder) Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder) Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder) indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
