We are thrilled to offer you our final auction for 2021. And what a year it has been with a very buoyant secondary market (and not just with wine). We wish to thank all our vendors and buyers whose charm, discernment and loyalty continues to shape our business.
While this will be a “Live” auction, Covid restrictions have determined this will be delivered in a slightly different way. Our ‘virtual Live’ auction will start at the normal time of 6pm on Tuesday 30th November. Whilst you won’t be in the sale room, we welcome you all into our online platform for the sale. The “Buy Now” component to this auction will start on Wednesday 1st December at 11.30am until 7pm Thursday 2nd December.
The evening will start with a wine made by the revered Tom McDonald – who in terms of accolades is one of the most recognised and successful winemakers New Zealand has produced. There are the usual suspects with wines from Stonyridge and Te Motu from Waiheke along with Te Mata, Craggy Range and the second vintage of Villa Maria Ngakirikiri as well as Church Road Tom – the man who started it all off.
Sub-regions for Pinot Noir are really coming to the fore and Bannockburn is well represented from Central Otago with Pyramid Valley Calvert, Mt Difficulty and many vintages of Felton Road Blocks 3 and 5. But it’s not all about Bannockburn in Central Otago with wines from Two Paddocks, Rippon and Prophet’s Rock Cuvee aux Antipodes which is destined to become known as one of our great wines. Further north we come across more Pyramid Valley from Waikari and super-star Martinborough producers Dry River, Craggy Range and Ata Rangi.
New Zealand’s Syrah gets a great deal of praise and rightly so with wines from the likes of Trinity Hill Homage, Craggy Range Le Sol and the now no longer produced Block 14, Passage Rock, Ata Rangi, Church Road Tom and the multi award winning Te Awanga.
Our selection of whites offer fantastic drinking over the summer months with crowd pleasers such as Millton Clos Ste Anne and Pyramid Valley Chardonnays as well as Cloudy Bay Te Koko, Pyramid Valley aromatics and multiple vintages of Felton Road Block 1 Riesling.
Not to be outdone, Australia puts its best foot forward with Lake’s Folly from the Hunter, Petaluma, Torbreck RunRig and Penfolds with Bin 707 and Grange Bin 95 including a 1971 in fantastic condition.
OWCs of Christian Moueix’s Dominus from 2004 and 2006 will certainly demand attention as one of the most coveted wines from the Napa.
We have been very strong with the fantastic wines from Germany for a while now and this offering is no different with Joh. Jos. Prum, Donnhoff, Dr Loosen, Fritz Haag, Muller Catoir and the absolutely drop-dead gorgeous wines of Egon Muller.
Piedmont dominates the Italian section with Gaja, Marcarini, Paolo Scavino and Vietti . If you are looking for a great wine to adorn your Christmas dinner table, it will be hard to go past the Antinori Pian dell Vigne Brunello.
Mrs Wine Auction Room is adamant that Champagne should be consumed at anytime but especially during the Festive season. We have some beauties on offer with vintages of Dom Perignon, Piper Heidsieck Rare, Taittinger Comtes, Pol Roger and Gosset from the establishment. But that’s not all with new superstars like Leclerc, Chartogne-Taillet and Egly Ouriet expressing their talents.
Alsace with Domaine Weinbach and Zind Humbrecht rub shoulders with Rhone royalty with Beaucastel including multiple vintages of Hommage to Jacques Perrin, Marcoux, Janasse, Chapoutier, Pegau and Clos des Papes from Chateauneuf du Pape and JL Chave Hermitage both blanc and rouge from Hermitage.
Burgundy has been getting a lot of attention lately and we have some excellent examples with Comtes Lafon, Leroy and Raveneau in the whites, along with Comte Armand, Lamarche, Esmonin, Lafarge, Liger-Belair and Dugat-Py in the reds.
Bordeaux is traditionally strong, and it is no different in this auction with aged wines from Chateaux Angelus, Palmer, Margaux, Leoville Barton, Ducru Beaucaillou, Pontet Canet and Pichon Longueville Comtesse to whet your whistle.
The fortified selection features wines from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s with offerings from Mazuran’s and a circa 60s Corbans Special Reserve along with Sandeman and Warre’s. There is also more of the Seppelt’s Para Liqueur that has proven to be very popular.
If Madeira is your jam check out Rutherford Old Trinity House Bual or for a slice of history why not try the Blandy’s Very Superior Rich that was bottled in New Zealand circa 1960s.
If you do like non-domain bottlings, we also have Berry Bros Finest Amontillado.
We finish up with whisky- highlights being a 1966 Glenturret and a limited bottling Lawry’s Workshop Distillery from these fine shores.
Please take your time to scroll through our final catalogue for 2021. We know that each lot offers great value and may even be that perfect gift for the holiday season. Buying wines from auction presents a great opportunity to attain mature wines or wines on their way to maturity and those rarely, if ever, found in retail. However, it is worth remembering that wine continues to age in the bottle and will eventually fade - for some wines this could be short term, for others long term
As with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports and critic reviews and imposing realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment.
So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction. Happy browsing and please bid responsibly.
All bids are binding.
