Following our incredible February auction we proudly bring to you our Late Summer Rare and Fine Wine online auction. This is the tale of two hemispheres with over 65% the wines on offer coming from south of the equator. In our largest auction ever, we have some incredible wines and fantastic value options. Something for everyone with wines for the table or the cellar if you are that way inclined.

Kicking off with the New Zealand Bordeaux blends we have Stonyridge Larose, Te Whau and Te Motu from the picturesque Hauraki Gulf Waiheke Island, which is keeping the fine company of Church Road Tom, Te Mata, Newton Forrest and Craggy Range. These wines are always impressive and there are some fantastic vintages on offer.

New Zealand Pinots have been taking the world by storm and we have some of the best examples with Cloudy Bay, Two Paddocks, Quartz Reef, Lowburn Ferry, Crown Range Cellar, Mountford and personal favourites Prophet’s Rock and Valli.

Our Syrah’s too have had the wine world take notice and it is hardly surprising when you look at the quality of Craggy Range Le Sol, Te Mata Bullnose, Trinity Hill Homage, Te Rere and Bridge Pa.

We all know how good our white wines are and it is a privilege to have Kumeu River Chardonnays with both the Mates and the Estate (in my mind the best value Chardonnay from these fair shores) both from the highly acclaimed 2019 vintage. For the Riesling freaks out there we have another case of the 2010 Riesling Challenge where 12 winemakers were given a parcel of fruit from Waipara picked at the same time to put their expression of this noble variety on the wines they produced and what an array of wines this is.

The lucky country comes out swinging with some real heavy weights. No Australian section would be complete without the wines of Penfolds and this auction is no different with Bins 389, 707, 407 and Grange but this time we also have the rare and rarely produced Bins 620 and 60A. Competing for attention in the Shiraz selection is Two Hands with their My Hands and Mollydooker. These superstar wines are supported with many great value everyday wines that will please many wallets.

Not to be left out we have probably the largest number of South African wines brought to market in New Zealand. All brought to New Zealand by their owner and stored in a temperature and humidity-controlled cellar. With the burl of a Springbok front row there are wines covering four decades with many, if not most, at their ideal time for drinking.

The New World is rounded out with great examples from California with Dominus and some wonderful value wines from Argentina. Now that’s a New World section with a bit of wow!

Now in answer to this front footing from the New World, the Old World comes back fighting with some thirst-quenching German Rieslings. We are coming to the end of these wines that we have been able place into many auctions, so if you haven’t managed to procure some previously now is your chance.

Italy puts it’s hand up high with Brunello’s from Antinori and Banfi as well as Barolo’s from Vietti and Paolo Scavino.

There is value in abundance from the Iberian Peninsula with not only some great value Spaniards but also rarely seen table wines from Portugal.

The Burgundy offerings is enough to make one come over all a quiver with de Vogue, Comtes Lafon, Bouchard’s La Romanee, Dugat Py, Dujac, Liger Belair , Arnoux-Lauchaux, Lamarche and Armand Rousseau. I think I’m going to need a lie down!

If it is 100 pointers you are looking for, welcome to the Bordeaux section. We have 1982 Leoville Las Cases, 2005 Angelus and 2009 Haut Bailly all from a temperature-controlled cellar and all 100 pointers. These fantastic examples are supported with a 99 point Latour as well as Palmer, Lafite Rothschild and a bevy of great value drinkers.

To wash all these down we have fortifieds from South Africa, New Zealand, France, Australia and the 100 point Dow’s 2007 from Portugal.

Collection Information

To collect your purchases from The Wine Auction Room, please contact the team at least 24 hours prior to your preferred collection time. Collection is from 16-22 Virginia Avenue East, Eden Terrace. If you have supplied us with an out of Auckland address we will automatically assume you will want your wine couried to you. The cost of the courier is passed on at our cost and will automatically be added to your invoice. All wine must be collected within 10 days of invoice.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

COLLECTION

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), AG (Vinous), JO (Jeremy Oliver), JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) D (Decanter) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and (RC) Raymond Chan are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder) A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder) Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder) Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder) indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
