As we head into the winter months, we have a diverse selection of fine wine showering us with options for both one’s cellar and dinner table.

New Zealand Bordeaux blends always find favour, but it is our pinot noirs that really exposed the wine world to our red wines. Someone who was at the forefront of this red revelation in New Zealand was Larry McKenna, also known as “Mr Pinot”, and rightly so. Larry announced his resignation from Escarpment recently, but all is not lost as we have some of his single vineyard wines in this auction with both the Kupe and Te Rehua available. Martinborough is well represented with good quantities of Larry’s wines as well as Dry River and Ata Rangi.

Matakana is one of the Auckland region’s gems; and one of the gems of Matakana is Gillman Vineyard. Their iconic red is a nod to Chateau Cheval Blanc. Gillman use old world techniques to give their wines the structure of the Right Bank. We have five vintages of this rarely seen wine in our auction – be sure not to miss out.

One of our favourite Australian brands is Wendouree from the Clare Valley. “There is no Wendouree cellar door. No Wendouree website. No distribution network, marketing department, salespeople. Nothing. Not even an email address. To communicate with the Bradys you need to either call or write a letter. A letter!” They may not want too much interaction with their customers, but they make some of the most amazingly structured wines. We have several different wines available from Wendouree that we’re sure will prove to be very popular. Also, from Australia we have a couple of the more rarely seen super-premium wines from Penfolds with both Bin 60A and Block 42 available. Both these wines have only ever been produced twice. Hardy’s have been producing wines in South Australia for many generations and we are privileged to have their classic 1969 Hardy’s Claret (McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon) available for those who want a peek at winemaking history.

If it is big bottles you are looking for you’ve come to the right place. Locally we have Trinity Hill Homage and Cloudy Bay in magnum. Further afield there is Mongeard Mugneret and Raveneau from Burgundy, Chateaux Lascombes and Cheval Blanc from Bordeaux and Louis Roederer Cristal all in magnum. However, when a magnum is not quite enough, we have Kumeu River Estate and Coddington and Te Mata Coleraine in double magnums.

Patrick Piuze has been making waves in Chablis of late. This Quebec born winemaker has been touted as the next Vincent Dauvissat or Francois Raveneau which is high praise indeed. We are blessed to have a great selection of his wines from village level, Premier and Grand Cru from the fabulous 2017 vintage.

When we think about the south-west of France the names Cahors and Madiran aren’t usually the first names on our lips, but these historical regions produce wines of incredible age-worthiness. Cahors from Malbec and Madiran from the Tannat grape.

This is but a small smattering of what we have on offer in our Mid-Winter auction with many iconic brands and highly rated wines there is something in there for everyone.

Buying wines from auction presents a great opportunity to attain mature wines or wines on their way to maturity and those rarely, if ever, found in retail. However, it is worth remembering that wine continues to age in the bottle and will eventually fade - for some wines this could be short term, for others long term

As with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports and critic reviews and imposing realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment.

Collection Information

To collect your purchases from The Wine Auction Room, please contact the team at least 24 hours prior to your preferred collection time. Collection is from 16-22 Virginia Avenue East, Eden Terrace. If you have supplied us with an out of Auckland address we will automatically assume you will want your wine couried to you. The cost of the courier is passed on at our cost and will automatically be added to your invoice. All wine must be collected within 10 days of invoice.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card, or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), AG (Vinous), JO (Jeremy Oliver), JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) D (Decanter) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and (RC) Raymond Chan are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder) A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder) Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder) Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder) indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
