As winter descends, we are here to brighten your day with another fabulous online auction. It may be cold outside, but we are bringing warmth into your life with some vinous delights. There are some great value wines in this auction in good quantities - perfect for that mid-week dinner. With Reserves starting as low as $10, one is spoilt for choice with these soft, lovely food wines.

We start, as always, with the New Zealand Cabernet dominant selection where many of you have been delighting in the great value wines of the now no longer producing Te Whau. We have many vintages available of this Bob Campbell MW darling and it is easy to see why they have been preforming so well.

Speaking of chardonnay, we produce some pretty good ones here on the shaky isles and we have some of the best with Kumeu River Mate’s (Mrs Wine Auction Room’s favourite!), Pyramid Valley’s Lion’s Tooth and Field of Fire, Villa Maria Keltern and Kupe by Escarpment which was described by the late Raymond Chan as “a wine of elegance with understated power underlining the palate….A refined white burgundy style similar to Puligny Montrachet”. High praise indeed!

John Forrest’s wines often pop up in our auctions, much to the pleasure of the Riesling geeks out there, and we have a couple of variants with both his Valleys Dry and Collection noble Rieslings on offer accompanied by the Forrest Noble Semillon.

If it is aged New Zealand aromatics you are after it is difficult to go past Fromm La Strada. Our current auction has a great selection of aged aromatic wines from Marlborough’s iconic Fromm. Our La Strada range has dry and off dry Riesling and a Gewurztraminer from the early 2000’s (not to mention their 2004 Auslese Riesling).

Wines from Australia always feature in our auctions and Penfolds always has a great presence with their very sought-after wines like Grange and Bin 707 and it’s a delight to have a couple of the less produced wines like the 2004 Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet Sauvignon or the second only release of Bin 60A also from the 2004 vintage. To round out this great selection we also have some outstanding value on offer from the likes of Farm Hand One of a Kind Shiraz, Dolan Family Wines Shiraz or Grant Burge GB56 Shiraz all with Reserves of $16 or less. Now there’s some cellar fillers for you.

There is also a wonderful array of wines from further than these shores as well with Chilean Carmenere rubbing shoulders with indigenous varieties from Sardinia or table wines from Portugal. As with all The Wine Auction Room auctions, you’ll find wines from all corners of the world – too numerous to mention here. Take your time to browse our catalogue and use the advanced filter to zero into the categories most interesting to you.

As with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports and critic reviews and imposing realistic expectations. You will also notice that our photographs of each new lot are very detailed, helping you to inspect the wine from the comfort of your seat. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.

Collection Information

To collect your purchases from The Wine Auction Room, please contact the team at least 24 hours prior to your preferred collection time. Collection is from 16-22 Virginia Avenue East, Eden Terrace. If you have supplied us with an out of Auckland address we will automatically assume you will want your wine couried to you. The cost of the courier is passed on at our cost and will automatically be added to your invoice. All wine must be collected within 10 days of invoice.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), AG (Vinous), JO (Jeremy Oliver), JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) D (Decanter) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and (RC) Raymond Chan are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder) A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder) Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder) Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder) indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
