The auctions are coming thick and fast with plenty of opportunity to stock up the cellar or grab that trophy bottle for a special occasion. Our selection in this auction is vast – perfectly fitting for the last of our online only auctions for 2022 (our last sale for this year will be a live/online auction).
We start with the ever-popular New Zealand Bordeaux blends showcasing examples from the old favourites including Church Road, Te Mata’s Awatea and Coleraine, ably supported by Waiheke’s Te Motu, Te Whau, Goldwater and Stonyridge.
If Pinot Noir is more to your taste, we have some great examples of these silky and sensuous wines from Dry River and Ata Rangi in Martinborough. Moving into the South Island with the exquisite wines from Bell Hill and Pyramid Valley in Waikari, further south to Central Otago with Rippon, Prophets Rock, Gibbston Valley, Two Paddocks and Valli. Now that’s making a statement!
Our Syrah’s are making waves internationally and what could be better than the rare Kusuda from Martinborough ably supported by Elephant Hill, Villa Maria, Trinity Hill Homage and Craggy Range Le Sol from Hawkes Bay.
Some lovely, aged aromatics and chardonnays round out our New Zealand section jostling for a seat at your dinner table in the festive season. For me and Mrs Wine Auction Room the chardonnays from Pyramid Valley and Bell Hill from the Waikari sub-region of north Canterbury are always welcome at our table.
If the wonderful wines from the “west island” are more to your liking South Australia shows its best with the likes of Henschke Mt Edelstone and Hill of Grace, Grant Burge Meshach, Mollydooker and Penfolds. Lovers of cabernet check out the Ring Bolt that offers great value with the endorsement of winning the Langton’s Wine of Show trophy at the Margaret River Wine Awards.
Germany is incredibly strong with world-class examples of Riesling covering many must weights from producers such as Muller Catoir, Donnhoff, Fritz Haag, Joh Jos Prum and the fantastic Egon Muller.
Champagne features a selection of interesting wines and producers including Laurent Perrier, Grand Siecle, Charles Heidsieck, Bollinger RD, Krug vintage and Salon.
Alsace really steps up with Domaine Weinbach, Hugel and Rolly Gassmann.
The Rhone continues in its rich vein of form with Alain Voge, Maxime Graillot, Yves Cuilleron, Ferraton and Guigal in the north up against Soumade from Rasteau, Bosquets from Gigondas, Mordoree, Beaucastel and Usseglio from Chateauneuf du Pape in the south.
Burgundy – the wine of kings and the king of wine! This sale offers some of the great names with Domaine de la Romanee Conti leading the way with Dujac, JF Mugnier, Grivot, Dugat-Py and Francois Millet of de Vogue fame with his new family label (mark our words – these wines from Millet will be superstars in the future. We’ve stocked up and suggest you do too before prices become eye-watering).
If aged Bordeaux is more your style, we have Lafite from the 50’s as well as other First Growths including Mouton and Haut Brion. When the Right Bank is more to your preference, it is hard to go past Chateau Lafleur from Pomerol. There are also some interesting ‘second wines’ from Cos d’Estournel and Lafon Rochet from St Estephe. These, along with other Classed Growths and Cru Bourgeois that are ready to go now make this selection include something for everybody.
Vintage Port has been on a great run of late and we have Taylors from Oporto rubbing shoulders with aged fortified wines from these fair shores; Mazurans and an old Corbans Special Reserve from circa 1970’s.
Lastly, we are selling one of our wine cabinets. This has suited us very well, but with New Zealand’s premier wine storage facility at our fingertips, we no longer need two. The newer version is available in this sale and as they are front vented the can confidently be placed into an enclosed space.
Finally, as with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports, critic reviews, inspecting the detailed photographs for each lot, and setting realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary, and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.
Best of luck with your bids and don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to know about any of the wines. Please bid responsibly. All bids are binding.
