Description

Spring has sprung and our auctions continue to present plenty of opportunity to stock up the cellar or grab that trophy bottle for a special occasion. Our selection in this auction is vast and perfectly fitting as we turn our mind to sunnier times.

We start with the ever-popular New Zealand Bordeaux blends showcasing examples from the old Hawkes Bay favourites Te Mata Coleraine, Church Road Tom, Craggy Range The Quarry and Villa Maria’s Ngakirikiri, ably supported by Waiheke’s Te Motu, Te Whau and Stonyridge Larose. These are perfetly rounded out by the man many thought was the beginning of New Zealand fine wines with McWilliams Cabernet Sauvignon made by Tom McDonald who the Church Road Tom was named after.

If Pinot Noir is more to your taste, we have some silky and sensuous wines across many vintages from Dry River, Ata Rangi, as well as Kusuda from Martinborough, Bell Hill and Pyramid Valley from Waikari, and Burn Cottage, magnums of Felton Road and many vintages of Valli from further down the road in Central Otago.

Our Syrah’s are making waves internationally and what could be better than the multiple vintages of Craggy Range Le Sol and Trinity Hill Homage (some in magnum). To back up these superstars scroll the catalogue for Elephant Hill, Te Mata Bullnose and Sacred Hill Deerstalkers from Hawkes Bay and the outstanding Kusuda from Martinborough. Rarefied air indeed!

While the New Zealand white wine section is smaller than normal it is proudly headlined by the excellent 2016 Bell Hill Chardonnay.

Some wonderful wines from the “west island” with many in magnum. Henschke Hill of Grace and Penfolds Bins 389 and 707 along with the very rare Bin 60A also in magnum. If magnums are a little too much for your dining table, there’s plenty alternatives on offer with Wendouree, Jim Barry Armagh from Clare, Henschke Mt Edelstone or a 100-point Clarendon Hills Astralis.

Champagne features a selection of interesting wines and superstar producers with Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle and Alexandra Rose. Dom Perignon presents vintages from 1990 and the outstanding 2006, with their Plenitude P2 featuring vintages 2002 and 2003. Louis Roederer Cristal 2006, Bollinger RD 2002 and two fantastic wines from the highly rated 2008 vintage with Krug and Billecart Salmon Louis Salmon Blanc de Blanc help bring the sparkle to this part of the auction.

For me the sparks really start to flywith the excellent range of wines we have from the Rhone. Multiple vintages of Mordoree and Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape including Beaucastel Blanc. If it is the Northern Rhone that takes your fancy cast your eye over Cote Roties from Guigal and Rene Rostaing. All these wines have either come from a temperature-controlled cellar or from professional cellaring services so bid with confidence.

Burgundy – the wine of kings and the king of wine has some of the great names with Jean Grivot, Domaine Dujac and the rare Domaine de la Romanee Conti Duvault Blochet Vosne Romanee 1er which is not produced every vintage in the reds. The whites are equally spectacular with multiple vintages of JF Mugnier Nuits St Georges Clos de la Marechale Blanc.

If aged Bordeaux is more your style, we have many larger format bottles along with older vintages of Haut Brion and Palmer and a wonderful bottle of 1921 Beychevelle. There are also many OWC’s including the highly-rated 2010 vintage Beychevelle, Cantemerle, Gloria and the 100-point Pontet Canet all at realistic Reserves. Second wines also feature strongly with Les Forts de Latour, Carruades de Lafite and Petit Cheval

Vintage Port has been on a great run and there are many vintages available with highlights not limited to Taylors 1960, Croft and Dows 1963 and Grahams 1970.

To complete our October offering we have several older bottlings of XO cognac vying for top spot with a bottle of Penfolds Bin 108 Reserve Brandy. We don’t believe this brandy has ever been commercially released and is the precursor to the Penfolds Lot 1990 Pot Distilled Single Batch Brandy. The bottle that we have came from a former assistant Food and Beverage manager at the Hilton Adelaide where Penfolds would hold a number of their consumer dinners and show their loyal followers what they were working on in the background.

Finally, as with buying any second-hand goods there can be risk. This risk can be mitigated through reviewing widely available vintage reports, critic reviews, inspecting the detailed photographs for each lot, and setting realistic expectations. The reward however, of a fine wine at its absolute peak of maturity, offering its full range of primary, secondary, and tertiary flavours should be significant enough for most to negate the occasional disappointment. So, if the risk-reward scales are deemed favourable, we have a lovely selection of wines at various stages of maturity available in our current auction.

To collect your purchases from The Wine Auction Room, please contact the team at least 24 hours prior to your preferred collection time. Collection is from 16-22 Virginia Avenue East, Eden Terrace. If you have supplied us with an out of Auckland address we will automatically assume you will want your wine couried to you. The cost of the courier is passed on at our cost and will automatically be added to your invoice. All wine must be collected within 10 days of invoice.

CONDITION OF WINE

Goods are described as accurately as can be ascertained by The Wine Auction Room at the time, however Buyers of older wine must make appropriate allowances for natural variations of ullage and the condition of corks and labels. The Wine Auction Room has made every effort to describe any bottle that is not in excellent condition. Each Lot is sold by the Vendor with all faults and defects (if any) and with all errors of description and shall be at the Buyer’s risk on the fall of the hammer and neither The Wine Auction Room nor the Vendor shall be accountable for any deficiency, damage or loss which may arise thereafter.

BIDDING

All bids and price estimates are per bottle (excepting sets), not per lot. For example, if you make a bid of $10 per bottle on a lot containing 12 bottles you are making a total bid of $120. All prices are in New Zealand dollars. Successful buyers shall pay to The Wine Auction Room a buyer’s premium of 17.5% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium.

Bidding is per bottle and you must take the entire lot on offer unless the auctioneer states otherwise. All wines are checked prior to consignment. Phone bidding is by prior arrangement. Absentee bidding is available for registered bidders.

PAYMENT

Payment is Cash, Bank Cheque, Credit Card, or Money Transfer. We accept Visa and MasterCard for all wine purchases with an addition of 3%. Payment must be cleared prior to collection of wine and is due five days after the completion of the auction at the latest. This includes all buyers either Absentee Bidders or those present on the night.

Ratings

We have used ratings from a number of well-known wine writers. RP (RobertParker.com), WS (Wine Spectator), AG (Vinous), JO (Jeremy Oliver), JCL (Jeannie Cho Lee MW), BC (Bob Campbell MW) D (Decanter) and BH (Burghound) scores are out of 100. JR (Jancis Robinson MW) and (RC) Raymond Chan are scores out of 20.

Descriptions

Ullage is the term that refers to the gap between the bottom of the cork and the fill level of the wine. All wines are listed in the catalogue have Ullage level “IN into neck” or higher. If the level is lower, it is stated in the catalogue.

TS (Top Shoulder)          A good level in any wine 20 years or older.

US (Upper Shoulder)       Indicates slight natural reduction through easing of the cork and evaporation through the capsule

MS (Mid Shoulder)        Indicates some weakening of the cork and therefore some risk. This is not unusual in wines over 50 years old and estimates will take this into account.

LMS (Low Mid Shoulder)           indicates high risk and will attract low estimates.
